My French Dream - in retirement…

Wednesday, December 31st, 2008

So i was thinking what would be a really nice retirement. I have it in my mind, i just don’t know if it exists, given a few problems. First some background. In the 1988 i had a small apartment (5th floor walk up) in Aix en Province… I even remember the address, 13 rue de la glacier. Man, i pulled that out of deep memory. Anyway, thinking back to those years and my awful spoken french, i think i have an ideal retirement. (more…)

Curious George, Max & Ruby or Franklin? Pick your poison

Wednesday, December 31st, 2008

So we tape (DVR) a few shows for our 2.5 year old to watch. Having previewed the series i find some disturbing trends in each of them and a few lessons learned. Given that he seems to have bailed on Thomas & Friends, as well as Sesame Street, i had to find some other options. They all have some drawbacks, here’s a rundown of the 3 we are on these days, Curious George (a destructive monkey), Max & Ruby (2 bunnies that don’t seem to have parents) and Franklin (a turtle who has a name but none of his friends do).

Women need reliable cars, doods don’t

Tuesday, December 30th, 2008

So i got a beater car. It is a 1999 vw passat. There are scraps on both sides of it, and it hasn’t been washed in a long time. It has 50k miles on it, so that is basically 5k miles a year, quite low. I drive 4 miles each way to work, more or less 4 days a week, plus various trips to the airport (17 each way) and other offices now and then. We also have a new 2008 Subaru Outback. (more…)

Web company success stories

Monday, December 29th, 2008

So we all were probably alive and on the internet in the 1999-2000 and no, more recent bubble blowup of internet glory. That got me thinking… There are some success stories and sites that seemed to have made it past/despite the economy or market crash… Then i remembered… I know two of those stories quite well,  DC Urbanmom and Thinkgeek. More about IPV6 ?

Monday, December 29th, 2008

Ok, several people have written in and said that i basically write little about IPV6. So here is an update about it:

  • The Amsterdam Internet Exchange publishes traffic stats for IPV6 here
  • Hurricane Electric seems to be a or the leading IPV6 network volume and IP wise (shameless plug for them and Mike Leber & Martin Levy at Hurricane Electric’s IPV6 page)
  • Other exchanges and networks are either member locked for the IPV6 traffic or they aren’t recording it
  • As a percentage of all internet traffic you can do some funky extrapolation and get some numbers…

So others offering IPV6 traffic are basically all exchanges worldwide, you can find info about internet exchanges, commonly referred to as IXP’s either on Wikipedia or by the association, Euro-IX.

So what does IPV6 get you? The good stuff! (more…)

Babies cause tennis elbow

Sunday, December 28th, 2008

I swear i got tennis elbow in my left arm from holding our baby. So therefore babies cause tennis elbow in the opposite arm that you would get the tennis elbow in, since you are not in as good of “arm shape” as you are in your dominant arm. I think it will either go away or get better gradually, the main thing is rocking our Fritz to sleep in your arms is a constant 45 degree bend in that elbow and voila!  Tennis elbow.

The week that isn’t

Sunday, December 28th, 2008

So if you are reading this live, Monday the 29th is tomorrow. If you are reading this dead, this is an old post. Regardless… Why operate a business that is open between xmas and new year’s? It just doesn’t seem like a good use of your employee’s time and that extra week off should be tacked on or give them 50% pay or something during that week instead of making them come to the office and fill their faces with xmas cookie leftovers, long lunches, late arrivals and early dismissals?

At one employer i used this week to redo and improve some internal systems, since it was uninterrupted time, but at others it was just a dead zone and many customers are also on hiatius at this time.  Make up your own mind, but for many businesses it is just a waste.  Oh, and with the economy in the crapper, give them the time off so they can spend more money and get into debt more so that they have to keep working for you!  So vacation = employee loyalty due to spending beyond their means.

Christmas wrap up

Friday, December 26th, 2008

Too much paper from the whole xmas thing. It seems that we are also recycling the bags that xmas presents come in, therefore destroying the xmas bag industry.  I would guess we have more than 50 of them, so if you are going to give us a present, ask in advance for a bag to put it in, and we’ll save you the regifting of your bag that you got from someone else. Isn’t christmas wonderful

In youth sports…Have a plan A, have a plan B - the coach behind my house

Wednesday, December 24th, 2008

So, i know a thing or two both about amateur and professional tennis. In fact, it is one of the rare things i would say i am an expert on in more or less every category or section of the subject.  Junior tennis, college tennis, professional tennis, been there, done all of that. So, if you turn out to have a talented child in any sport, including tennis, make sure you have a “Plan B.
Lets look at the plans, given a guess for tennis as an example… (more…)

The music you like stems from the decade you grew up in

Tuesday, December 23rd, 2008

So, as usual, i must fight with the wife about the radio station. Which lead me to think… How are musical preferences generated? Looking at our age difference of 6 years i have to conclude that the influential years we both had were a decade apart. For me it was the 1970’s. For her, the 1980’s. So while i prefer Bread, Abba, Fleetwood Mac and a dozen others, she gravitates towards the Boss, and other 1980’s bands/personalities. If i can’t get that, give me any AM station so i can get some talk radio.

So what happens? Well, we compromise of course and listen to children’s music on any trip of any length.
