Let’s cut down trees to build Hot Lanes on I 495 in DC

So, i look out my office window.  Thousands of trees have been yacked to make room for more lanes on one of the worst roads ever, I 495, aka The Beltway that circles Washington, DC.  All the cloverleafs around route 7 and the beltway have been completely removed and now there are large empty spaces where the trees use to be.  Now i am not some crazy treehugger, but the Hot lanes concept seems like a waste.

The hotlanes have some additional lanes with the ability to pay extra and therefore get in the less trafficy lanes and speed to your destination.  There is no way this is going to work, and it hurts the little guy.  The people that live in Springfield, Virginia and commute to Maryland or Tyson’s corner are not the people that can afford the extra costs.  This is a stupid idea.  Bail on the stupid hotlane thing and figure out an equitable solution to the little guy and the rich folks.

Shush commie, it does not hurt the little guy. It gets more money to build roads from the people who are willing to pay, and it reduces traffic on the rest of the road for the people who aren’t willing to pay. Why don’t you argue that they shouldn’t be allowed to build toll roads because some people can’t afford them, or build expensive houses for the same reason. You don’t like it, tell Roger to pay you more. :)
